The Parish of St. Peter the Apostle (Calauag)

The Parish of St. Peter the Apostle was founded in 1846 and since then has had four churches built one after another. The Christianization of Calauag, however, and Fr. Diego de Oropesa set foot on its soil. Due to the frequent raids by the Moros, both the poblacion and the and its Catholic community disappeared for two hundred sixty seven years as the people retreated to Piris (now Buenavista) and Tikay (now Guinayangan). Part of them took refuge also in Kigtan, while other took residence in Anas and, later on, in Apad. They finally settled down in Pinagbayanan along Kalawag river.

Since its foundation, seventy one Priests have been assigned to the Parish, many of whom are total strangers to the present generation.

The parish of St. Peter is alive today because it has preserved the faith it inherited from its forebearers.  One undisputable testimony to it is its big Catholic population which ten years ago, when the diocese was created, stood at 51,614 out of Calaug's total population of 54,908.  Over the last ten years it acquired 18,127 new members, a telling proof that the efforts of the past hundred years have not been in vain.

Still another testimony to the vitality of the parish is the growth of priestly vocations in its midst as evidenced by the good number of its seminarians and priests.  To date, it has contributed seven priest to the church, including Fr. Franklin C. Rivero (of the diocese of Lucena), Fr. Justo L. Pereira (also of the diocese of Lucena), Fr. Ramon C. Tiama, Fr. Romulo C. Comia, Fr. Ranilo J. Pera, Fr. Teodocio Dolores, Fr. Miguel Peralta and Fr. Roberto Peralta (the last three being members of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin).
